Creating a news article/blog post is like creating a website. You need to factor the look, content structure and usability of the post that you have written. It is essential to create a structure that flows well for your readers and that is structured in a format that suites them and the major search engines like Google and Bing.

This post has been designed to give you some free SEO tips on how to build SEO friendly news articles. One SEO tip to remember, is it’s not all about stuffing keywords into an article to get to the top of Google. Keyword stuffing techniques now tend to penalise your website. Always remember to write relevant content, that your target audience would like to read.

1) Brainwave

Have a brainwave session to think about:

  • What you want to write about?
  • Why you want to write it?
  • Will it appeal to your audience?

2) Structure your news article

Like a project, book or even a song, there is usually a start, a middle and ending. Use that as a starting point for structuring your article:

  • Introduction – introduce what the article is all about
  • Main body – this section is where all the interesting and exciting content is. This is the reason thousands of people are going to come and read your article (we hope).
  • Conclusion – here we have a final summary about everything that has been previously written.

3) Paragraphs

Paragraphs are a given whenever we write, make sure you use paragraphs (<p></p>) to break your content into relevant manageable chucks of information. If you are unsure when you should break out into a new paragraph, consider whether the topic has changed within your sentences.

4) Headings

Headings are crucial, they structure the page into sections of relevance. Readers may skip content by looking at the headings to get straight to the section that they are particularly interested in. Headings are also incredibly relevant for SEO purposes. You need to structure your articles from top to bottom using <h1> – <h6> tags. Remember to use a <h1> and <h2> tag in your article as standard. These two have a strong impact on the SEO score of your article. Use your focus keywords in your headings where possible as this helps with your SEO campaign.

5) Article Length

One of the many search engine ranking factors Google uses is content length. SEO specialist plugin provider Yoast recommend that you should have a minimum of 300 words in your posts. If your competition has more relevant information on the same topic, it is likely that they will be getting a better rating then you.

6) Inbound Linking

If you have other posts or pages with relevant information on the post topic make sure you link to that information. It adds strength to your post by showing that you have more knowledge on the subject. Yes, Google does rank you on inbound links. One clever way to identify the relevant places to put inbound links, is to search your existing posts for the keywords you are using.

Times are changing, gone is the day that you could use Black hat SEO techniques to stuff you posts full of keywords to get to page one on Google. Black hat techniques such as keyword stuffing can and will land you in a bad place with Google (it actually could result in your site being removed from Google’s SERPs). On a positive note, if you implement the 6 SEO tips above, you will be on the way to writing some awesome news articles that your readers and Google will thank you for.
