Security experts H2 Cyber Risk Advisory Services is advising business owners to look beyond just technology and software to ensure they are fully protected against a surge in the number of ransomware attacks targeting US and UK companies.
The attacks extort millions of pounds from businesses of all sizes, often crippling companies to the point of collapse. Carried out by notorious criminal groups and gangs with names such as Wizard Spider, Ragnar, and REvil, the attacks see highly experienced hackers break into company IT systems before locking out access, and then demanding a Bitcoin cryptocurrency payment in exchange for a decryption key.
Increasingly ransomware gangs are now focusing on mid-sized companies that generate enough revenue to make them a target but aren’t yet large enough to have dedicated cybersecurity staff.
Commenting on the warning, Kevin Hawkins, Managing Director of H2 Cyber Risk Advisory Services, said: “The number of ransomware gangs and attacks is growing exponentially worldwide, and the threat is all too real.
“Organisations of all types are being targeted, from schools to hospitals to government bodies, but what we are seeing now is a worrying trend of smaller businesses also falling victim to these attacks.
“Unfortunately many business owners believe that just having the latest software or the right technology will prevent them being attacked, but this isn’t the case. Effective protection involves understanding people and processes too, and putting in place measures and practices that provide 360 degree protection.”
According to cybersecurity software firm Bitdefender, ransomware attacks increased by 485% in 2020 alone as a consequence of more people working digitally from home. High-profile UK targets have includedorganisations such as Amey, Hackney Council, Wentworth Golf and Country Club, Scottish Environment Protection Agency, UK Research and Innovation, and just last month, Serco.
Unless victims pay the ransom demands of the criminal gangs, their data is sold off on the dark web to the highest bidder or simply dumped online for all to see and access. This includes sensitive business information, GDPR protected data, and even compromising personal details and messages.
H2 Cyber Risk Advisory Services works with IT companies and directly with businesses of all sizes to provide comprehensive cyber security solutions. This includes direct access to a dedicated cyber security officer who manages all aspects of a company’s cyber security for as little as £200 per month.
