[September 2021]: From the UK’s most popular car model to the male to female ratio of driving licence holders, how much do you really know about the UK’s car industry? 

Gumtree’s new research breaks down the current UK Car industry. Using visualisations, they’ve looked at a range of facts and figures including the most popular 2021 new models, the male to female driver ratio and the most searched-for second-hand cars to name a few.

The Vauxhall Corsa ranks as the most popular new car for Brits in 2021

With more than 26,000 2021 registrations, the Vauxhall Corsa ranks as the most popular new car within the UK followed by Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Golf. The top 10 car models for 2021 show that the need for smaller, more cost-effective cars is still very much present for Brits.

Most Popular Engine Types in the UK 

Research reveals that 58.9% of UK cars are petrol and 37.6% are diesel. Looking at the remaining cars, 2.1% of the market is powered by hybrid electric technology, with the final 1.2% using plug-in and batteries.

Other interesting stats discovered by Gumtree: 

  • 80% of UK men and 71% of UK women hold a driver's licence.
  • In the city of Manchester, more than one in two Mancunians own a car, with almost 1.4 million vehicles on the road in total. 
  • 20 in 100 drivers in the UK drive a black car, with silver and blue cars completing the top three most common car colours, representing 54.91% in total.
