How Do Gymnasts Train – The Formula for Success

All gymnasts have common defining factors such as low body fat, toned muscles, and a great posture. Their bodies are powerhouses with incredible strength, flexibility, and balance. While training is a part of all sports, it plays a particularly significant role in gymnastics. It is because of this training that they can maintain healthy body weight and remain lean and strong. This kind of high-intensity strength training is what makes gymnasts so much fitter, healthier, more flexible, and stronger than other athletes.

However, a gymnastics training programme will never focus on increasing muscle mass as bulky gymnasts cannot carry their body weight and perform all the exercises optimally. Instead, it involves using your body weight to build strength and improve kinesthesis. If you are wondering how a gymnast can achieve such high levels of strength, and elasticity, here are some vital elements from a gymnastics training routine that helps them fulfil their goals:

  • Building Core Strength

Building the core and making it stronger is one of the primary goals of gymnastics training. It includes different types of v-sits (pike, straddle, tuck) and the dish hold, that challenge the core and improve flexibility in the hamstrings.

  • Stretching

Stretching is the basis of all gymnastics routines. Without this element, gymnasts can't achieve the kind of flexibility required to perform splits and other extensive movements. It is also crucial for increasing the length of the hamstrings and preventing injuries.

  • Cardio

This one may be a bit of a surprise, but Cardio is an essential element of a gymnastics training routine. Gymnasts must have a healthy heart and good stamina. And this can only be ensured through regular cardio exercises. A 30-minutes warm-up is a must before beginning gymnastics training and can include simple exercises like burpees, sprints, bear crawls and mountain climbers.

Along with these exercises, gymnasts must also follow certain rules while training, such as:

  • Setting Goals

Every gymnast is different and has different goals to achieve through their training. It is essential to set goals at the beginning of the training programme as all the exercises and routines will be centred around those goals. From improving flexibility, and building strength, to preparing for a professional competition, gymnasts can focus their training programme around achieving any of these goals.

  • Maintaining Consistency

Gymnasts need to train for 20-25 hours every week. And consistency is key to achieving success in gymnastics. Hence, gymnasts must create a training programme around their goals and then work towards fulfilling them daily. It is the only way to ensure that they get the desired results.

  • Giving Time for Recovery

Gymnastics training can be extensive and intense and put a lot of strain on the bones, muscles, and joints. It is why it is crucial to allow the body some time to recover. Taking regular breaks and resting between training schedules is vital to prevent serious injuries, repair any wear and tear, and recover from existing injuries.

It is essential to start as early as possible to achieve success in gymnastics. If your child is interested in learning gymnastics, there is no better time than now to start, and no better club than MK Springers to enrol for their training. We are one of the fastest growing and the only OFSTED registered local gymnastics clubs in Milton Keynes that can provide your child with the support they need to train in this rewarding sport.
