The Issue

Any water system that has the right environmental conditions could potentially be a source for legionella bacteria growth.  There is a reasonable legionella risk in your water if:-

  • Water is stored or re-circulated as part of your system
  • The water temperature in part of the system is between 20 – 45 degrees C
  • There are deposits that can support bacterial growth
  • It is possible for water droplets to be produced and dispersed
  • Employees, visitors, etc are exposed to any contaminated water droplets.

Legislation

The control of Legionella Bacteria in water systems is a legal obligation by the employer for employees and visitors by protecting occupational health and safety in line with HSG 274 part 2.

Control measure required include:

  • Risk assessments
  • Record keeping
  • Corrective Action
  • Audit Trails

HSG 274 Part 2 indicates that the best method of reducing risk is the Automatic Water System Temperature Monitoring

Methods for watering temperature monitoring mainly include taking manual readings from all outlets or as identified in the risk assessment.
