What happens when you Google images of Martin Hewitt? The vast majority of them show a guy in a thick orange jacket, stood on a snowy mountainside, sporting a beard that’s covered in ice.
Just your standard adventurer snapshot then. Not really.
Martin Hewitt was a Captain in the Parachute Regiment, and serving in Afghanistan in 2007. He was leading an attack in Helmand Province when he took a shot to his right shoulder that left him without the use of his arm. He recovered from his life-threatening injuries, but his career in the Army was over.
What on earth is an otherwise fit young guy to do in those circumstances? For Martin, the answer was to take up Alpine skiing. He excelled at it, and went on to establish an Adaptive Ski Racing team of injured servicemen. He captained the team, and represented Great Britain internationally.
Sticking with the snow, Martin went on to lead some spectacular challenges, including the Adaptive Grand Slam (AGS), which aims to have teams of people with disabilities scale the seven highest peaks in the world. He’s also appeared alongside Prince Harry in ‘Harry’s Arctic Heroes’, broadcast on BBC1, in which a group of wounded servicemen attempted to trek to the North Pole.
This television exposure made him a familiar face to many of the public, and he established a successful speaking career. He presents on stages around the world, talking about resilience, overcoming adversity, teamwork and leadership.
He will be leaving for Antarctica in November of this year, for yet another hugely challenging, and very cold, quest.
Before he leaves, he has agreed to record a presentation for the online Standing on the Shoulders of Giants Event on Saturday 30 October. He’ll be appearing alongside a gathering of some of the most inspiring speakers, all with military or service connections. The day, hosted by ex-Army serviceman, Joe O’Connor, promises to be massively valuable, especially to serving and ex-forces personnel who are, or who wish to be in business.
