Mycarcheck.com market guide: November 2019
Hybrid electric and battery electric car sales surge. Weather ends the biking season.
Mycarcheck.com’s valuation experts reveal significant trends in the UK used vehicle market and choose a car and bike of the month.
Vehicle valuation manager at mycarcheck.com, Stuart Wilson, said: “If you’re looking for a practical family vehicle that will keep you safe and comfortable through the cold winter months, the BMW X1 really comes into its own at this time of year. This premium compact SUV comes jam-packed with high end features such as LED lights, heated steering wheel, electric tailgate and the ability to switch between comfort and sport mode at the touch of a button. BMW’s xDrive 4WD system is offered on the majority of powertrains, with the X-Line and M Sport most desirable. 2015 models with decent spec and average mileage are currently available for around £17k and, as always, check the history before purchasing.”
As to market trends, Wilson said: “Hybrid electric and battery electric vehicles continue to lead the alternative fuel charge, accounting for almost 10% of new cars registered last month. Overall the new market is down 2.9% for the year-to-date compared to the same point in 2018, with many buyers waiting to see what happens with Brexit and the tax rate changes scheduled for April. Interestingly, this is likely to intensify the alternative fuel trend as plenty of new electrified models will have launched by then. For the pioneers, it will be their second or third alternative fuel car, with their trade-ins providing great green options for used buyers.”
On the motorbike, scooter and moped sector, mycarcheck.com’s Mark Field said: “If you’re refusing to let the British winter get in the way of riding, the Kawasaki Versys 650 may be the perfect choice. History has shown the Versys to be rock solid in terms of reliability and the tall adjustable screen offers welcome protection from the wind. Handguards and panniers come as standard on the tourer version and adding heated grips makes it an ideal all-year motorcycle. At less than £7k new or £4.5-£5k for a good condition post-2015 example (with the larger fuel tank, ABS and extra 5hp and 2ftlb of torque), the Versys 650 is incredibly tempting. As always, be sure to do a provenance check before you buy.”
As to market trends, Field said: “Wet leaves on the floor, the first sprinklings of snow and serious flooding have brought the motorcycle season to an abrupt close. Overall, the new bike market is up 2% on last year while the used market has remained relatively stable – a good result considering the economic uncertainty and we’ve outperformed the four-wheel sector. We hoped for more though after a strong start to the year. Sales stalled when parliament rejected the first Brexit deal and the ongoing political upheaval isn’t helping consumer confidence.”
