Coffee cup recycling bins are rolled out across all Roadchef motorway service areas

27 November 2019: One of the UK’s leading motorway service area (MSA) operators, Roadchef has introduced 87 new Costa coffee cup recycling bins across its 30 locations, as part of its efforts to divert all waste from landfill and recycle as much as possible.

Full implementation of the initiative follows a successful trial at its Sandbach motorway service area. This latest project by Roadchef aims to minimise its impact on the environment through effective waste management systems. Other standout actions from the motorway service operator include recycling 500 tonnes of cardboard every year, turning 220 tonnes of coffee grounds into biofuel and buying all energy from newable sources, including on-site solar panels, saving 480 tonnes of CO2 per year alone.

Mark Fox, Roadchef CEO, added: “Working closely with Costa to recycle disposable cups takes us another step closer to becoming the first motorway service area operator to achieve zero landfill status. Improving awareness around recycling at businesses like ours has a knock-on effect for our customers, as it means they’re more likely to recycle at home. Our commitment to delivering sustainable solutions ensures that customers feel confident that Roadchef is taking responsibility for its environmental impact, in turn making UK motorways a safer and happier place.”

A Costa Coffee spokesperson, said: ”At Costa Coffee we are continuously working to drive change in the industry to ensure that more takeaway cups are disposed of and recycled, both inside and outside of our stores. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Roadchef to install nearly 90 cup recycling bins across all its locations, making it easier for customers to enjoy their favourite Costa coffee before recycling their cup.”

Roadchef has recently been recognised as the best of the big three motorway service operators in the country, with its Norton Canes services voted the number one choice by road users responding to the independent Transport Focus survey.
