Many of us struggle with overwhelming emotions that when energised, can feel akin to a tsunami, hitting us with a force we feel challenged to stay afloat from.
The more we try and keep a lid on these emotions, the worse they get, simply because they’ve been suppressed for so long that each new event will be like a rolling stone gathering moss. The need for personal expression is natural, but when we’ve been taught that to do that equals danger in some way, we bottle emotion up which is a recipe for longer term disaster.
If you’ve suffered from rejection, neglect or trauma in childhood, it can lay the foundations for intense emotions but they can be overcome, and you can achieve emotional control.
I help my clients to regain balance when emotions escalate using Distress Tolerance, Mindfulness, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness. This teaches you to build resiliency, and become present; loosening the grip of frightening perceived possibilities when lost in the moment, to think clearly, set boundaries and find a way to express yourself that reflects who you are, rather than the conditioned behaviour that’s been learned. It will give you the choice to change the course of your relationships with both yourself and others.
The power really is in your hands.
