As the weather becomes colder and the nights draw in, the last thing drivers need is to spend dark, frosty mornings trying to jump-start their vehicles. To ensure you aren’t spending your winter left out in the cold, it is important to prepare your car now for harsh weather conditions. Cazana, the UK’s largest vehicle database, outlines some of the winter servicing steps that will have vehicles purring on even the coldest of mornings.

  • It’s a good idea to get your car serviced and checked over by your local vehicle technician. Colder, wetter weather causes your vehicle a lot of problems that can be prevented with a professional service. Do some research as many garages may offer discounts on winter services.
  • Make sure your car battery is in full working order. We use our lights and heating more in the winter, putting extra strain on the battery, which can wear it down.
  • Check your coolant levels and top up where needed. It should be 50/50 water and antifreeze.
  • Winter tyres can provide extra grip in cold, icy conditions, so it may an idea to invest in a pair. This is also a great time to check the tread on all your tyres, including your spare. You can do this simply by using a 20p coin. Insert this into the main tread grooves of your tyre and, if the outer band of the coin disappears, then your thread is above the legal limit. If you can still see the 20p coin, then your tyres are unsafe to be driving on and need to be changed as soon as possible.
  • Winter weather brings rain and snow, so make sure your windscreen wipers are in tip-top shape and get any worn-down wipers replaced. These are not expensive to buy and are easy to change yourself.
  • Make sure you stock the car with a winter breakdown kit including rope, a flashlight, first aid kit, blankets, jump leads, water, a shovel, etc. What you can stock will largely depend on how much storage capacity you have in your vehicle but you should have the essentials with you at all times.
  • Park your car in your garage or find a sheltered spot for parking. Now is a good time to clear out your garage and make sure there is plenty of space for your car when the weather takes a turn for the worse.
  • Test that the heating in your car is working adequately and there are no leaks. If there is a problem, consult your local garage.
  • Have a read over your car insurance policy and familiarise yourself with it. Know exactly what you are covered for in the event of vehicle failures and scrapes, which can be exacerbated by poor driving conditions.
