After the forced shutdown of businesses and offices, companies are now seeing the benefits of their staff working from home, in fact the hashtag #WorkFromHome has become somewhat of a buzzword and on Instagram alone it has had almost 17,000,000 uses and its counterpart #WFH 3,200,000 uses. There are many advantages from working from home, not only for the employee but also the company. On the flipside of the coin comes many disadvantages, and here we weigh up the pros and cons.
Advantages of Working from Home.
The primary advantage of WFH is there is no need to commute to work, giving the employee additional free time, and then there are the travel expenses, no longer need to pay for fuel, wear and tear on your car or paying for public transport passes such as bus passes or railcards. Working from Home also means you can take breaks when you like, you can be more flexible with your work hours as well as no longer need to ‘dress for work’ unless of course you are on Zoom Calls and then it is only necessary from the waist up (As long as you don’t stand up mid-call!)
Disadvantages of Working from Home.
The primary disadvantage from working from home is distractions, this can be from other family members, household chores or even visitors whether they be friends or cold callers. Another disadvantage and one that has come to light is procrastination, and you do need to have self-discipline to get on with work, it is easily to be distracted by doing the breakfast dishes, a bit of light dusting or even a little daytime TV, if that floats your boat. Other factors such as the internet going down, issues with your laptop or other home IT equipment can also prove to be a hurdle.
The pros and cons of working from home are quite balanced and really from an employee and company standpoint it really is down to personal preference and what works best for the individual. Of course, it does seem to be the future of the modern workplace
