What are Biometric Access Control Systems and their Application for Businesses

It is difficult to imagine a commercial property, industrial unit or even a small office without a security system, in the present times. Due to a rise in fraudulent activities, crime, and thefts, the demand for advanced security systems that prevent and protect against such acts has increased significantly in recent years. Access control systems are one such security system that prevents the entry of unwanted visitors into your property and allows only authorised people to enter. Access control involves the management of access points in a building using a device, information, or identification criteria. While all types of access control systems are effective, the most convenient and secure ones are Biometric Access Control systems (i.e. Identity based access control).

Before we tell you how your business can benefit from them, let us first explain what biometric access control systems are.

What Are Biometric Access Control Systems

Biometric systems analyse individual biological data to identify a person with the help of technology. These access control systems only allow access to people whose details are already saved in the system or for identification. Biometric control systems utilise personal traits or physical features that are unique to each individual. Examples of the most efficient biometric access control systems include fingerprints, retina scans, facial recognition, and voice recognition, etc.

How Do Biometric Access Control Systems Work

Biometric access control systems are equipped with scanners for collecting and making a record of biological data from people. Based on the type of biometric system you have, it may scan fingerprints, faces, retinas, and voices among other biometric parameters.

  • Once the system has scanned your biometrics, it saves your details in the database which also includes biometrics of all other authorised people in the office and outside.
  • The next time you scan your fingerprint or any other feature, the security system matches and identifies the scan against the saved details and authorises your entry into the premises.
  • When an unwanted person tries to scan and enter the building, the scanner will not identify it as an authorised biometric and deny them access.

How Can Biometric Access Control Systems Benefit Businesses

Unlike other access control systems, it is much harder for someone to get past a biometric system. It is because, these systems use keys, fobs, cards or secret information or codes which can be easily lost, stolen, or forgotten. Since biological information can neither be replicated nor lost or forgotten, businesses are better off installing a biometric access control system on their premises.

Whether it is the public sector, healthcare, finance, law or any other type of business, biometric systems are the ideal access control systems for all kinds of organisations. They provide maximum convenience and security compared to other types and are just as straightforward to install as all of them.

Another reason why biometric systems are ideal for businesses is that they allow easy management of authorisation. Administrators and owners can easily save and allow access or revoke permissions from the primary console, something which is tricky to ensure in the case of the card, key or fob based access control systems. Biometric access control systems also have the advantage of being more accurate and cost-effective and less time consuming than others, making them ideal for a busy work environment.
