We recently heard about a scheme that is helping thousands of children deal with the thorny issues of mental health. However, its not all good news and they need your help, here is a little more about the scheme and how you can help it continue.
After the birth of his daughter in 2010, former radio presenter Chris Duke was bogged down by feeling “just not right”. When a health visitor allowed him to answer questions on his wife’s post-partum questionnaire, Chris was informed he may be depressed, something he’d never before considered.
Chris became acutely aware of how tough it is dealing with a mental health diagnosis as an adult, and his attention suddenly turned to what the same struggles must be like for children. This inspired the creation of ‘Lucy’s Blue Day’, and a national speaking tour to get the message out to the UK’s kids.
Lucy is a very special little girl with magical hair. It changes colour with her emotions. If she is feeling happy, it is purple. If she is jealous, it will turn green. This charming story is the tale of when Lucy wakes up and her hair is blue, and she doesn't understand why. She soon learns that it is #OKNotToBeOK.
“Mental health is a topic becoming more and more “accepted” in society but addressing it from the perspective of a child is still rare,” explains the author. “We joined forced with EuroMillions winners Fred and Lesley Higgins, who have been extremely generous in funding this project, to create a book any child will be gripped to – while helping them understand their emotions and the importance of not feeling ashamed when blue.”
Continuing, “It’s a universal message, which is why I have travelled around the country to schools and other groups, reading the book and spreading the wider message of embracing and accepting all mental health issues without stigma, fear or shame. There’s plenty more work to be done, and we’ve recently complemented the book with packs that contain pencils, bracelets, an audiobook and other items. As you can see, we plan to spread this message as far and wide as possible.”
Here is where you come in, can you help?
As some of you might know, I travel around the UK giving free mental health and inspirational talks to children all over the country as part of our “Lucy’s Blue Day” sessions. We were dealt a blow this week when our beloved Lucy’s Blue Day car decided that she wasn’t going to work any more.
She has been having more and more issues and we feel it’s time she had a rest. That car is currently in the garage trying to work out what is wrong with it. But right now, we don’t have a car, which means it is VERY difficult to get to our sessions.
We are now crowdfunding to get a new Lucy car so we can continue to provide these sessions, for free, to schools all over the UK. Can you help?
It doesn’t need to be a donation; it could just be a share.
Do you know a celebrity or influencer? Could they share the fundraiser? The sooner we reach our goal, the sooner we can get back on the road properly.
